Responsible alcohol server training is not required by Alabama state law.
However, many employers in Alabama do require it because it helps reduce their liability in cases where an employee sells alcohol to someone they shouldn’t.

Alabama’s Responsible Vendor Program (RVP) is overseen by the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board under AL Code § 28-10. While the program is voluntary, vendors who participate receive legal protections and may avoid license suspensions or fines if an employee makes an underage sale.

To qualify for these protections, the vendor must show that:

• The employee completed an ABC Board-approved RVP training program,

• The vendor did not commit or knowingly allow the violation,

• The vendor had no reason to know the violation would occur.

To earn and maintain Responsible Vendor status, licensees must:

• Train all employees who sell or serve alcohol using an approved alcohol education course within 30 days of hire,

• Report all new training to the ABC RVP office and pay the required fee,

• Hold semiannual policy meetings for alcohol-related staff,

• Keep training and meeting records on file,

• Display signage on the premises about the policy against selling alcohol to minors,

• Renew their RVP certification annually.
