  • How can I renew my California RBS Certification?

    For a server to renew their California RBS Certification they must be in their eligibility window (90 days before current certification expiration). Here are the steps for recertification:

    1. Servers and License Admins/License Admin Designees (with the server on their California RBS Roster) will receive notifications to their emails registered in the California RBS Portal when the server is eligible to renew.
    2. Servers will log into their existing Server Account on California ABC Online Services (featuring the RBS Portal). If the email address they used at the initial time of registration is no longer valid, they can email onlineservces@abc.ca.gov to have their email address updated.
    3. Servers will pay $3.00 to California ABC
    4. Servers will take an California RBS training course from an authorized training provider such as SSC Seller Server Classes at www.SellerServerClasses.com/California. Training providers have 24 hours to confirm server training in the RBS Portal. SSC confirms your training immediately upon completion.
    5. Servers return to the California RBS Portal once training has been confirmed (they should do a check within 24-48 hours after completing training) and have 3 attempts and 30 days to pass their California RBS alcohol server certification exam with a 70% or better.

    *Servers who became certified in Spring 2021 are now eligible to renew their California RBS Certifications.

    To recieve your Food Protection Managers Certification, go to FMC Food Managers Certification, https://www.FoodManagersCertification.com/California, and enroll. 

    FMC Food Managers Certification is accredited by ANAB for ANAB-CFP for CFPM exams.

    The proctored ANAB-CFP exam can be taken through Prometric Test Centers, ProProctor Remote or an EduProctor On-site proctor.

    How long do I have to get certified after starting employment?

    You must obtain a valid California RBS certification and pass the ABC-administered exam within 60 calendar days from your first date of employment.

    How long is the RBS certification valid?

    The RBS certification is valid for three years from the date of issue (the day you pass your exam). You can renew it within 90 days of its expiration.

    What does the SSC RBS Training include?

    This course consists of 5 modules outlined below:

    Module 1: The Social Impact of Drinking
    Once you’ve finished this module, you should be able to:

    • Correctly define terms relating to the sale or serving of alcohol in the state of California.
    • Describe the positive and negative impacts of alcohol sales on the community.
    • Discuss the cost to the community for the overuse of alcohol.
    • Describe your role as a responsible server of alcohol in public establishments.
    • State the intent of California laws relating to alcohol sales to minors, intoxicated persons, and Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

    Module 2: The Impact of Alcohol on the Body
    After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

    • Discuss the effects of alcohol on the body.
    • Describe the danger associated with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol.
    • Recognized the signs of potential intoxication.
    • Correctly define Blood Alcohol Concentration, and
    • Understand factors which and impact the severity of intoxication.

    Module 3: State Laws and Regulations
    After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

    • Discuss the requirements for mandatory Alcohol Server Certification as of July 1, 2021, in the State of California.
    • Define terms related to the sale and service of alcohol in the State of California.
    • Identify the different categories of crimes in the State of California.
    • Discuss the different forms of liability a licensee or employee might face for violating California state rules and regulations.
    • Discuss California state laws regarding the service of alcohol.
    • Understand how California state laws regarding the sale and service of alcohol are enforced.

    Module 4: Alcohol Sales or Service to Minors or Intoxicated Patrons

    Module 5: Management Policies supporting the Prevention of Alcohol Sales or Service to Minors or Intoxicated Patrons
    After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

    • Understand the duties of the licensee to create a guide for employees who sell or serve alcoholic beverages including the benefits of having such policies in place.
    • Describe the Critical Policy Elements for Responsible Beverage Service.
    • Understand what the incident log is and what it is used for.
    • Describe the importance of having policies in place regarding discrimination prohibitions, as well as monitoring patron’s alcohol intake and minors seeking alcoholic services.
    • Understand guidelines for the effective development and use of policies for the service of alcoholic beverages for consumption to the public.
    • Describe the obligations to cooperate with law enforcement

     

    What is the California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification?

    It's a mandatory certification for alcohol servers and their managers in California, required by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).

    Who needs to obtain RBS certification in California?

    Any alcohol server and their manager working in establishments such as restaurants, bars, grills, resorts, lodges, convenience stores, grocery stores, theme parks, movie theaters, and catering services.

    How do I get a bartender permit, license or card in California?

    To obtain your Server ID Number and Alcohol Training

    • Note, you can go ahead and create your account with SSC Seller Server Classes prior to getting your California Server ID, but you will have to have your California Server ID prior to finishing the program.
    • Please visit the California Alcohol Beverage Control Responsible Beverage Service portal https://abcbiz.abc.ca.gov and create an account on the ABC Online website.
    • Once an account is created with the California ABC Online Portal it will allow you to process the payment for your $3 dollar Server ID Number.
    • Once your Server ID Number has been purchased please create an account with SSC Seller Server Classes on our website at SellerServerClasses.com/California
    • Once the SSC account is created on our website SellerServerClasses.com/California it will allow you to make a course purchase for $9 dollars.
    • To make an individual purchase of the alcohol seller server course you will need to click on “Courses” at the top of the page at SellerServerClasses.com/California/courses and then click on the “Take this course” button on the right side of the page.
    • You will then need to enter payment information along with your personal information and then click on the blue “Review Information” button.
    • If everything was entered correctly you will then be taken to the next page, where you will need to agree to the policies and then click on the “Purchase” button.
    • If your payment is approved, you will then need to click on “Course” from the menu and then click on the green “Study” button to begin the course.
    • Once all the modules have been reviewed you will be prompted to complete your profile, this is where you will then enter your California RBS Server ID number so we may report your training.
    • After all your information was entered and everything checks out, we will report your training to the state of California ABC Online Services immediately.
    • Finally, you will need to take the final exam on your California ABC RBS account where you purchased your California Server ID number.
    • Once you have successfully completed the RBS final exam you will be issued a certificate number until the state starts issuing certificates.
    • For any questions on the final exam or certificate numbers, you will need to contact California ABC RBS directly.
    • You can find contact information by going to https://www.abc.ca.gov/education/rbs and then selecting the District Office for your jurisdiction.

     

    Who is required to complete RBS training for California?

    How do I update my name within the California RBS Portal?

    Servers can contact California Alcohol Beverage Control RBS at onlineservices@abc.ca.gov to request changes.

    The changes may require proof of legal identity.

    What is RBS Certification about?

    California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification indicates that an alcohol server has completed an ABC-approved RBS training program, such as SSC Seller Server Classes at SellerServerClasses.com, and passed the RBS certification exam administered by the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).

    After completing the training and exam provided by SellerServerClasses.com/California, the California RBS certification remains valid for three years.

    How do I get a Food Handlers Permit in California?

    To obtain your Food Handler Permit for the State of California
