Makeup is expensive, and no one likes to throw away good money. But holding on to old makeup could be harmful to your health. The question is; when does makeup get old?
Some makeup products, particularly those manufactured in Europe, have a freshness date on the packaging, letting you know how long after opening the product will stay fresh. But a good rule of thumb for makeup without such a label is:
- Toss eye makeup (eyeliner, mascara concealer) after three months. The reason is simply: your eyes may be the windows to your soul, but they are also highly susceptible to bacterial infections.
- Toss liquid makeup after one year.
- Toss powder makeup after two years.
Keep in mind these are just rough guidelines. If you notice an odd smell, or if the ingredients look like they are starting to separate, it’s time to toss it. Heat and humidity is not your makeup’s friend, so consider storing your makeup some place other than bathroom.
Remember: when in doubt, throw it out!
